New York State Wood Energy Team (NYSWET)

Building the market for renewable wood energy in New York

In 2014, the NYBA partnered with the Empire State Forestry Foundation to bring together wood energy industry stakeholders, state government agencies, regional agencies, extension educators and others.  The goal? To develop a plan and secure funding to build the market for wood energy in New York.  And, the group’s efforts paid off.   In July 2014 the U.S. Forest Service recognized our group as one of 11 state wood energy teams.  In 2015, the U.S. Forest Service funded an additional dozen teams resulting in nearly half the states offering programs by Wood Energy Teams to spread the efficient and sustainable use of local, renewable wood energy.

The NYSWET offers Bioenergy Labs, a.k.a. workshops, for candidates for wood energy heating systems.  The Labs are held at facilities that are currently using modern, efficient wood heat and attendees can ask the owners about their experiences converting to wood energy.  Simultaneously NYSWET members in the North Country, the Southern Tier and the Catskills are working to identify likely candidates for wood energy heating systems.  The NYSWET works with these candidates and Bioenergy Lab attendees to analyze whether their facilities could benefit from converting to wood energy.
